I don't think it's rude at all. If you want to call just to gush about cats or Carriers, then that's fine all on its own. I don't think it's wrong to just call to talk about things you like or enjoy, really.
What I mean is, does it need to be scheduled because you have something else pressing to do instead, or because you don't know how long the conversation will take?
